Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo jẹ́ ọ̀kan nínú àwọn ìpínlẹ̀ mẹ́rìndínlógójì ní orílẹ̀ èdè Nàìjíríà, tí ó wà ní agbègbè ẹkù gúúsù ti orílẹ̀ èdè náà.[1] Gẹ́gẹ́ bí àbájáde ètò-ìkànìyàn lórílẹ̀ èdè ti ọdún 2006, ìpínlẹ̀ náà jẹ́ ìpínlẹ̀ ẹlẹ́ẹ̀kẹrìndínlọ́gbọ̀n ní iye pẹ̀lú ènìyàn tí ó tó mílíọ́nnù mẹ́ta-àbọ̀-dínní-díẹ̀ ní orílẹ̀ èdè Nàìjíríà.[2] Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo jẹ́ ìpínlẹ̀ ẹlẹ́ẹ̀kejìlélógún tí ó gbòòrò jùlọ ní ààyè tàbí agbègbè gẹ́gẹ́ bí títóbi ilẹ̀ ní orílẹ̀ èdè Nàìjíríà.[3] Olu-ilu ìpínlẹ̀ náà àti ìlú rè, ni Ìlu Benin, tí ó jẹ́ ìlú ẹlẹ́ẹ̀kẹ́rin tí ó tóbi jùlọ ní orílẹ̀ èdè Nàìjíríà, tí ó sì jẹ́ ibùdó ilé-iṣẹ́ tí ń ṣe rọ́bà orílẹ̀ èdèy.[4][5] Wọ́n dáa sílẹ̀ ní ọdún 1991 látara Ìpínlẹ̀ Bendel tẹ́lẹ̀rí, wọ́n sì tún mọ̀ọ́ sí ìró ọkàn orílẹ̀ èdè.[6] Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo pín ààlà pẹ̀lú Ìpínlẹ̀ Kogi sí àríwá-ìlà-oòrùn, pẹ̀lú Ìpínlẹ̀ Anambra sí ìlà-oòrùn, pẹ̀lú Ìpínlẹ̀ Delta sí gúúsù-ìlà-oòrùn àti gúúsù-gúúsù àti pẹ̀lú Ìpínlẹ̀ Ondo sí ìwọ̀-oòrùn.[7]

Àwọn ààlà òde-òní ti Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo yí àwọn agbègbè tí wọ́n jẹ́ agbègbè oríṣiríṣi ìjọba àti ìjọba tí wọ́n dásílẹ̀ ní ọgọ́rùn ọdún mọ́kànlá AD sẹyìn ká, ìyẹn Ìjọba Benin.[8] Ìlú àtijọ́ ti Edo, agbègbè ti ìlu Benin òde-òní, jẹ́ ilé sí díẹ̀ nínú àwọn iṣẹ́-orílẹ̀ tí ó tóbi jùlọ ní àgbáyé.[9] Ní ọdún 1897, ìjọba aláwọ̀-funfun ṣe ìrìn-àjò ìjìyà ti agbègbè kan, tí ó pa púpọ̀ nínú àwọn ìlú Edo àtijọ́ run àti ṣíṣàfikún agbègbè náà sínú ohun tí yóò di gúúsù Nàìjíríà lábẹ́ àbò ìjọba aláwọ̀-funfun.[10][11]

Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo jẹ́ ìpínlẹ̀ tí ó kúnfún àwọn oríṣiríṣi àwọn olùgbé tí ó gbilẹ̀ jẹ́ àwọn ará Edoid, pẹ̀lú àwọn ará Edo (or Bini),[12] Esan, Owan àti Afemai people.[13] ÈdèEdoid tí ó wọ́pọ̀ ní sísọ jùlọ ni èdè Edo, ní èyí tí wọ́n máa ń sọ jù ní ìlu Benin.[14] Ẹ̀sin kììtẹ́nì ni ó gbilẹ̀ jù ní Ìpínlẹ̀ Edo.
