Ìjúwe"Iron Age" protohistoric water pot from Old Yagala, Sierra Leone (West Africa) (1750747411).jpg
Photo taken in 1968 at Fourah Bay College (Sierra Leone). Unlike cooking pots, water-storage pots have small openings at the top to reduce water loss. The walls, though, are fairly thin so they allow evaporation which keeps the water cool. There were no water sources at the top of the hill where Old Yagala was situated, so water was brought up from below ( a long, steep climb) and was carefully conserved.
