Need more advice[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hi, you recently dropped a comment on my talk page about how my edits looks likes that of a machine translated stuff, thanks a lot for the feedback. I am actually new to this translation of a thing on yoruba wikipedia. Is it that i shouldn't translate everything on the english wikipedia to yoruba, or i shouldn't put english text in the yoruba article? Lordgentual (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:16, 25 Oṣù Kàrún 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Itokasi section needs Àdàkọ:Reflist[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Agbalagba! I don't understand your edit this morning to remove the Àdàkọ:Reflist ({{Reflist}}). It is necessary in the Itokasi section to list the references. The Undo to your edit put it back where it belongs. Also - when you edit and make a change, please remember the Àkótán (Edit summary) to explain what you did. Sorry I can't write in Yoruba. I try to help however I can! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 09:51, 31 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2018 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Two pages the same?[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Agbalagba! Please look at the names of these two pages you created:

All the content of the page belongs on the one with the correct name. The other one can be a #REDIRECT to the correct page name. If you need help doing this, just let me know here which page name is correct. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 18:21, 6 Oṣù Kọkànlá 2018 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Edited to add: It's clear by your second edit and the Wikidata item that the "Ilé isé..." spelling is correct. With such a long page name, I'm marking the misspelled page name for deletion, it doesn't need to be kept as a REDIRECT. If you disagree, please let me know here. Hi. i recently created an article Ada Udechukwu and i want you to please help me check if it conforms to the rules. Thanks for your time. @Lordgentual: greetings to you, and thank you for contacting me. I must commend you have done a good job. The article Ada Udechukwu is good, but here are few improvement needed on it. 1: You need to link the existing articles such as : "Chiua Achebe", "Amerika", "Ìpínlẹ̀ Enugu" and "Nsuka" by adding this [[ ]], e.g Chinua Achebe.

2: Writing in a standard way like this show you really understand Yorùbá orthography. It would have been much better if you could add diacritical marks (Àmì ohùn) to the articles. To do this, kidly go to Play store and download Kika keybourd. You can whatsApp me on 08062222027 to reason together. RegardsAgbalagba (ọ̀rọ̀) 08:13, 3 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Nominated articles for review[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Dear Admin, I want t to use this medium to bring you your notice the recent massive articles created by two users on this platform. I had earlier noticed while reading through the pages that those articles were purely machine translations and the users demonstrated non compliance to the rules attached to Yo WP. However, the the users works are of two dimensions.

  1. User: Mir koks is absolutely not have any knowledge of writing in Yorùbá lang. I guess that's why he uses Google for his translations and wise enough to add diacritical marks on the texts inaccurately. This is a way to deceive admins from getting his articles deleted, and also to delude the vast readers of Yo WP. As a result of this, the credibility of our dear language Wikipedia will be nothing to write home about if allowed to be.
  1. User: Biggiepopa on his own has been conveniently crowding the Yo WP with Google translations articles and has not relented in doing so after being cautioned by me to stop doing so in the past weeks and were urgent to request for help on where necessary. In my opinion, this user has not learned from the mistakes having pointed them out his him, and this may trigger other armatures like him to develop a passion in defacing Yo WP with unappreciated contents like his.

Bellow are list of articles to be reviewed

and so many others like that. All these articles needs your diligent review @T Cells: thanks. Agbalagba (ọ̀rọ̀) 17:09, 19 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Good day, i have not been using google translator for my articles, thanks. Biggiepopa (ọ̀rọ̀) 17:20, 19 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

@Biggiepopa: could you please fix these articles? I am inclined to delete these articles if they are not fixed. Simply changing a few words after they are Google-translated isn't good enough. I also request that you stop creating new articles until these articles are fixed. T CellsTalk 19:29, 19 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

If you must know, the tool I used to translate the articles I did is a tool developed by Wikipedia itself. And so far it credits the original article(which it does by the way), there is no problem as Wikipedia materials are free to be recreated as long as they abide by terms and conditions. And it is very whimsical of you to opine I have absolutely no knowledge of Yoruba Wikipedia. Please write correctly too, it's hard to keep up with your mistakes.Mir koks (ọ̀rọ̀) 18:56, 20 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

@T Cells: I understand you, I have started working on the articles and I request you give me time to work on all of them but I must reinstate that I didn’t use google translator to create any of the articles. Best regards Biggiepopa (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:04, 21 Oṣù Kẹ̀wá 2020 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Greetings, Agbalagba! It's good to see you active here. This past week I saw you're working on the page Journalism . I wrote on its Talk page (Ọ̀rọ̀:Journalism) that I believe it needs a Move so its page name will be in Èdè Yorùbá. Is there a reason you want it to remain in English? I've been cleaning up the display alphabetization of pages in the Ẹ̀ka:Àwọn oníròyìn ará Nàìjíríà, so I want to keep these topics together. Cheers- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 14:21, 1 Oṣù Kẹrin 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Hi Oníṣe:Deborahjay, thank you for your tireless work on Yoruba Wikipedia and your keen observation about the article topic Journalism.
  • Yes, I left the topic in English for visibility reasons. What do I mean by that? As a community manager, I have realized that most Yoruba Nigerians don't search for content on the internet in their mother tongues; they prefer to search in English so that they may have better results, even though what they are looking for is also available in other languages. They believe they would be limited if they searched in local languages, except they want a specific result.
In the past, most article topics were written in Yoruba, and this will limit the page views of Yoruba Wikipedia as they do not use Yoruba to search unless we do some advocacy for Yoruba Wikipedia. That is when the project enjoys mass traffic.
In as much as we want to promote Yoruba language on the internet via Yoruba Wikipedia, we still need people to make use of our free content on Yoruba Wikipedia.
  • Our approach: We tried to keep many article topics (but not all) in English but translate the body in Yoruba. so that when you search in English on Google, Yoruba Wikipedia will be among the top results you get just because we left the topic in English.
We understand this is a problem, but this is what we can do for now for people to have access to free knowledge in Yoruba.
  • If keeping keeping the article topic in English would be a problem for categorisation, then I might have to move it to Iṣẹ́ Ìròyìn in Yoruba. But if it wouldn't, we can leave it in English.
Thank once again for all you do on Yoruba Wikipedia.
Cheers-Agbalagba (ọ̀rọ̀) 10:46, 5 Oṣù Kẹrin 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]
Agbalagba, thank you so much for your consideration in this matter. Your detailed explanation raises a matter for clarification before taking action, and thus a best-practices standard can be shaped. Specifically from your third point:
  • "...so that when you search in English on Google, Yoruba Wikipedia will be among the top results you get just because we left the topic in English.
How does a web search engine (e.g. Google) know to return results in the Yoruba language, i.e. pages in the Yoruba WP, when the query is in English? Is the source of the query marked as Nigeria by the user's IP number? Is it even regional (to distinguish between parts of Nigeria with speakers of Èdè Yorùbá, Èdè Ígbò, or Èdè Haúsá, which each have a Wikipedia project though not necessarily a page on the requested topic)?
The next question is about #REDIRECT pages from English to the local language page. That will be in a separate section. Looking forward to further clarification. Cheers! Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 16:21, 6 Oṣù Kẹrin 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]
Thank you @Deborahjay, I understand that most query is predominantly in English and that is why we use to leave the topic in English just for pur page to pop up. The source of the query does not mark the user's IP number as well. For instance, Túndé Kèlání has an article in Eng. and other languages. If you search fpr the key work Túndé Kèlání, Yoruba Wikipedia page would pop up as I have said and experienced.
  • As for the REDIRECTING, Yoruba Wikipedia page will just be among the top results not that it will directly redirect to Yoruba.
Why I consider this as a problem is that, most Yoruba speakers does not search in Yoruba as many of them don't know diacritical marks (Yoruba tone marks). If they search in Yoruba with necessary marks, they will surely get preferred results in Yoruba language.
This is all I understand about the article topic and search result experiences.
Thank youAgbalagba (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:49, 6 Oṣù Kẹrin 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Àtojọ awọn èso[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Agbalagba! I visited a page you've been editing, Àtojọ awọn èso, and have some questions. The topic seems to be "List of fruits" - which I, with a layperson's knowledge, understand to mean the seed-bearing body of a plant. As most of the content is in English, it's easy for me to read. Here are some questions:

  • Numerous items are clearly not fruits, but rather:
    • Vegetables and tubers (non-seedbearing parts: celery, .

garlic...)

    • Leaves (tobacco, tea...)
    • Grains and seeds (teff, sesame...)
    • Condiments and prepared foods (pico de gallo, Caesar salad...)
    • Agricultural terms and related (Companion planting, Vegetarianism, Mr. Potato Head...)
  • The list would be best in alphabetical order.
  • Rather than manually adding numbers to the line items, there's an editing mark (I've never used but have seen it...) that generates consecutive line numbers. This helps if the list will be alphabetized and expanded.

I look forward to hearing your response to the above. My first inclination is to delete what clearly aren't fruits, which would make good use of my body of knowledge while lacking Yoruba language skills. Cheers! Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 21:33, 4 Oṣù Kejìlá 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Hi @Deborahjay, It's good to have you around again. Thanks for pointing out some important facts about the list I recently gathered and published on Yoruba Wikipedia (Àtojọ awọn èso) . I quit agree with you that not all the items listed are not 'fruit'. Some are leaves, grains farming terms, condiments and so on. I must say it is a work in progress, I have it in mind to do some sorting on the list, but got busy with some other real life stuffs along the line. I will attend to it as soon as possible.
As for the automatic numbering you mentioned, the editing mark is # without space from the initial letters. Also, I will appreciate it if you can help put the page in a better category. Thanks for your timely prompts. Cheers! Agbalagba (ọ̀rọ̀) 14:43, 5 Oṣù Kejìlá 2023 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]
