Ìkíyèsí White House copy of the 1819 painting Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:"...President James Monroe looks like a man in early middle age, although he was 61 when Morse painted him..."The genesis of this portrait was a commission for a full-length portrait from the City of Charleston, South Carolina... In anticipation of [Monroe's visit to Charleston,] the first presidential visit [to that city] since that of Washington, the Common Council on March 1, 1819, resolved to "'solicit James Monroe ... to permit a length likeness to be taken [i.e., painted] for the City of Charleston ... .'" The bust-like portrait was finished on December 18... . "The White House painting is assumed to be the replica for [Monroe's] daughter ... Morse took the life portrait with him to Charleston where he produced a full-length portrait for the city... ."
