Description of variables

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

A list of this template's variables and their definitions.

Ocean_name = the name of the ocean
image_Ocean = characteristic_image.png Please avoid sunset pictures or maps (For maps, use image_bathymetry)
see also: Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceans/Galleries
caption_Ocean = Text about the image; avoid repeating the name of the ocean, it's already in the first field of the infobox
image_bathymetry = bathymetry_image.png (or other image, avoid maps showing only the location of the ocean)
caption_bathymetry = Text about the bathymetry (or other) image
location = Text about the ocean's location, add country if the ocean is located in several countries (added for compatibility with Template:Infobox ocean)
coords = Latitude and Longitude coordinates of the ocean. It is common to use the approximate center of the ocean, or simply any notable portion of the ocean for the coordinates.
Sample coordinates: See coord for useage
type = type of ocean (see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Oceans#Ocean_types and Ocean#Types_of_Oceans)
Samples values with wikimarkup (only one or two may apply): periglacial, subglacial, artificial reservoir, endorheic, meromictic, oxbow, rift Ocean, underground, crater Ocean, intermittent, former Ocean, shrunken ocean; oligotrophic, mesotropic, eutrophic, hypertrophic
inflow = major inflow sources - rivers, aquifers, glacial runoff, etc.
outflow = outflow waterway names. If evaporation or seepage are notable outflows, they may be included.
catchment = the area of catchment which includes the entire area of the drainage basin for that ocean. This may include rivers and other oceans. If this can be accompanied with a map or drawing, include it with the article.[1]
basin_countries = which countries have drainage to/from or border the ocean. To conform a standard, this should include all countries that are directly involved with the ocean's ecology; this would include inflows, outflows, or physically contact the ocean.
length = maximum length of the ocean; the length of the ocean at its longest dimension[1]
width = maximum width of the ocean; perpendicular to the angle used to calculate length.[1]
area = total area of the ocean's surface; if this value varies drastically (due to evaporation or changes in flow), attempt to find a documented average value.
depth = average depth of the ocean[1]
max-depth = maximum depth of the ocean[1]
volume = total volume of the ocean[1]
residence_time = residence time of the ocean water or ocean retention time; this is the mean time water spends in the ocean
shore = length of the shoreline; this should not include values for waterways directly connected to the ocean, and should reflect the shore at average surface area.[1]
islands = total number of islands in the ocean; it is common practice to also include the names of any notable islands in the ocean.
cities = notable cities or settlements on or near the Oceanshore
reference = references (added for compatiblity with Template:Infobox ocean)
align = "align=left" allows to align the infobox left (default is right), to avoid collision with another infobox, e.g. on Ocean Fenton, Michigan

This infobox for oceans was slightly modified only. It uses the basic copy and paste from Template:Infobox lake

If you have anything else to add, please be welcome to do so, but please leave a comment here. This article could be applied to any other body of water. However, before applying it to very large bodies such as oceans, consider generating a template specifically for those types of waters that would cater to the highly specific nature of those bodies.

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

If the place or venue has an "established", "founded", "opened" or similar date, use Start date (unless the date is before 1583 CE); if it has a URL, use Url.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

 • adr
 • agent
 • category
 • county-name
 • extended-address
 • fn
 • label
 • locality
 • nickname
 • note
 • org
 • region
 • street-address
 • url
 • vcard

Geo is produced by calling coord, and uses HTML classes:

 • geo
 • latitude
 • longitude

Please do not rename or remove these classes; nor collapse nested elements which use them.

When giving coordinates, please don't be overly precise.
