Welcome to the Yoruba Wikipedia! (are you 82.206.239.9?) Belgian man 19:15, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

A welcome from me also, prof. Adéwọlé. I saw your request for help on editing Wikipedia on the Afrophonewikis Group. We do not have help pages in Yoruba just yet (seeing that the first Yoruba contributors have just arrived last week), but for the time being I have duplicated some essential help pages from the English Wikipedia; you can find them at Help:Contents, or in the menu called 'navigation' to the left. If you have any technical questions about Wikipedia, don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page. — mark 09:33, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Introducing myself[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

I hold an MA in African Languages and Linguistics (Leiden University 2006) and have written my MA thesis on the body-part terminology of Yoruba (I carried out field work among the sizable Yoruba community in The Hague, the Netherlands). As such, I do read and understand some Yoruba, although unfortunately I do not speak it at any reasonable level.

I have been active on the English Wikipedia for over two years now, and I do have sysop status there. I have also been granted sysop status on the Yoruba Wikipedia, and so far mainly have been deleting vandalism and spam, as well as nurturing the few real articles being contributed. I'm excited that you and a few more native speakers of Yoruba have decided to start contributing to this edition of Wikipedia. My position as a sysop here is only interim, and my activities will mainly be facilitative. I think my experience with Wikipedia could be of help in this stage, and as a sysop I intend to help out where I can.

Getting this Wikipedia started[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

In organizing our efforts, the Community Portal might be of use. We can post messages there for everyone to read, and discuss central things like translations, policies on titles, et cetera. For a more thorough introduction to Wikipedia and its principles I will have to refer you to the English Wikipedia for now. It would be great if you could check out the basic policies and guidelines that have made the English Wikipedia so successfull, and perhaps you could consider translating the most basic policies into Yoruba so as to ensure a good start of the Wikipedia Encyclopedia in Yoruba.

The most important policies relating to content are:

  • Verifiability and cite your sources — these two closely related policies ensure that not just everyone can dream up fake articles or insert fringe theories into Wikipedia. Wikipedia, like every encyclopedia, is just a tertiary source, reporting what has been published in other reliable sources.
  • No original research — related to the above policies, this policy is there to ensure that Wikipedia is not used as a venue to publish original (non-peer reviewed) research. The rationale is that without this policy it would be impossible for Wikipedia to be verifiable and there would be no reason to trust it as a reliable source.
  • en:WP:NPOV — in a nutshell: all Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing views fairly, proportionately and without bias.

The most important policies related to working with others are:

  • Assume good faith — in allowing anyone to edit, we must assume that most people who work on the project are trying to help it, not hurt it. If this weren't true, a project like Wikipedia would be doomed from the beginning.
  • No personal attacks — in a nutshell: Do not make personal attacks anywhere in Wikipedia. Comment on content, not on the contributor. Personal attacks will not help you make a point; they hurt the Wikipedia community and deter users from helping create a good encyclopedia.

Now, of course these policies have been crafted by the community of the English Wikipedia and in the end, it might be good to adjust some things to the specific situation of the Yoruba Wikipedia. I believe, however, that we will need at least some good policies at this point. The motto: getting a Wikipedia started is not as simple as calling some others in to help writing content; we will need some basic policies also to guide the project through its early youth.

Again, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I am an administrator here, so I can help with moving or deleting articles; with translating the interface into Yoruba; and with all other sorts of things we might need to send this edition of Wikipedia off to a great start. — mark 09:33, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Ẹ k'aro o prof Adéwọlé. I have tried to solve the issue with S and the under-diacritic. If you edit a page, you will see a grey box below the 'save' and 'show preview' buttons. In it, you will see some precombined symbols in Yoruba orthography. If you click on a symbol it will be inserted.

I will test it myself in this very comment by inserting the name of a well-known professor: Ayọ Bamgboṣe. To me, it looks good. Does the name display right to you? — mark 19:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

(You can reply on this page by hitting 'edit this page' at the top or by using the section-edit link to the right of the heading or right here.)

The 's' dot in the 'Bamgbose' you type is still bad. Maybe it is a problem with my own computer. Thanks. E se pupo.

L.O. Adewole

Yeah, the problem may lie with your computer configuration then. Are you browsing the internet with Internet Explorer or with Mozilla FireFox]? I am using the latter (though the newest version of Internet Explorer displays everything OK for me too). — mark 15:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I am using internet explorer

Greeeting Loadewole!

Can you please help me add diacritics to this article? Any help at all would be gratefully appreciated, Thankyou.--Jose77 01:10, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

I tried but when I wanted to add them after clicking on edit, I couldn't get the wiki Yoruba characters below the article. I need to use these characters for the editing. As far as my knowledge of the system is now, I can do that only at the wikipedia page. Thanks.

Thankyou Loadewole for giving me the correct article name. I think the following diacritics are now available below the articles when editing:
Ẹ ẹ Ọ ọ Ṣ ṣ — Ẹ́ ẹ́ Ọ́ ọ́ — Ẹ̀ ẹ̀ Ọ̀ ọ̀
Á á É é Í í Ó ó Ú ú — À à È è Ì ì Ò ò Ù ù

You've done already a lot of great work for this Wikipedia Loadewole, congratulations.

Some little remarks that might be a help for you:

  • A localisation in the title, such as , Osun State, Nigeria is not necessary when there isn't an article yet about another subject with the same name. Example:
    • You want to write an article about Ilobuu in Osun, but there is already an article about another village Ilobuu, also in Nigeria, but in Oyo. The name of this article is Ilobuu. Then you can change the name of the existing article into Ilobuu, Oyo, and make a new article Ilobuu, Osun yourself. Ilobuu, which became a redirect, should then be rewritten into a short page with an explanation of the different meanings of Ilobuu, with the matching article links.
    • If there isn't another article about another subject named Ilobuu yet, it's not necessary to provide a localisation in the article name. Otherwise, people inserting "Ilobuu" in the URL bar don't get an article, and article names become too long.
  • It's not necessary to repeat the article name as a headline in the article. Headlines can be used, but only to divide the article into different sections. Normally, there is an introduction text above the first headline on each page.

Friendly greetings, Belgian man 19:37, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay :) Belgian man 19:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello prof. Adewole,

I have replied on my talk page. — mark 13:33, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

By the way, the number has increased with two since, so it's not completely set in stone. I don't know what to do about the inaccuracy though, as it is a feature that is hardcoded in the Wikipedia software. — mark 19:28, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Is this an English speaking Wiki? I can't understand anything.

It is a Yoruba speaking wiki. Even articles titled in English are summarised or reviewed in Yoruba

Hi Loadewole,

is this edit correct?

Greetings (and a happy New Year), Belgian man 16:11, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I have read the edit. It is excellent. Thanks a lot. L.O. Adewole

Okay :) Belgian man 20:57, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

It's better to write your articles direct under the Yoruba name as this is the Yoruba Wikipedia :) The English names then become redirects to the correct pages. If you want to change the title of a page, click "move" and write the new/correct name in the box named "To new title:". Giving a reason is handy but not compulsory. Greetings, Belgian man 20:09, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

See Talk:Main Page#500 articles... Greetings, Belgian man 17:30, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

P.S.: Do you know a Yoruba word for café, meeting place, village pump, beer parlour, tavern?... We can make a new page Wikipedia:xxx then, our local version of the en:Wikipedia:Village pump (I propose the main page talk acts like a village pump now).

Hi Loadewole,

what is this article about? It is the 1,000th article in this Wikipedia, congratulations! Belgian man 18:01, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

It is another article on Luba. I have moved it to Luba II.

So it's on the Tshiluba language? Belgian man 18:23, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes but written in Yoruba. What type of language it is, where i is found, etc
Okay, perfect. Thanks. I'm going to write a little press release; you'll hear from it. Belgian man 14:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. L.O. Adewole

The result is at Talk:Main Page#1,000 articles. I'll inform Walter of Wikizine. Greetings, Belgian man 20:22, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Could you please write a stub http://yo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 174 languages. If you do that, please put interwiki link into English version. If your village/town/city hasn't on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests) Pietras1988 TALK 12:08, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

I have done as you have requested. The article is under 'Kuro' in the Yoruba wikipedia and I have linked it with the English version.

L.O Adewole

OK, very thx. You are great! Last sentence is that more infos are on EN wiki or what? Pietras1988 TALK 16:30, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that is what the last sentence means.

L.O. Adewole

Hi Loadewole!

I saw you have been adding dictionary entries in English and Yoruba for a while, but actually, this is not a dictionary project, and therefore, those entries are in fact not really desirable. But we have a dictionary project too, en:Wiktionary, of which the (still empty) Yoruba edition can be found here. If you'd like to work on that project (too), take a look at the English Wiktionary (here) for some examples. Regarding the entries on this project: I'm afraid that those will be deleted by an admin in the future. Greetings, Belgian man 18:41, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

I will stop that immediately. Thanks for your observation. L.O. Adewole 1:40, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

No problem! Belgian man 17:20, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Końskowola - Poland[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Could you please write a stub http://yo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko%C5%84skowola - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko%C5%84skowola ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

P.S. If You do that, please put interwiki link into english version. 123owca321 15:39, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I have done what you requested. L.O. Adewole

Main page of Yoruba wikipedia[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

There is a problem with the main page of the Yoruba wikipedia. You may want to have a look at it. L.O. Adewole

Somebody had vandalised the page. You can solve such cases by clicking "history", clicking the date of the last edit before the vandalism (e.g. "19:52, 28 June 2007"), clicking "edit" (you'll see a "WARNING: You are editing an out-of-date revision of this page. If you save it, any changes made since this revision will be lost." warning but do not worry, that's your goal), editing nothing and clicking "Save page". I did it already this time because the vandalism was rather heavy.
This way, people who are not administrators, like you and I are, roll vandalism back. Administrators can do it with one click on the page where the difference between the last and the penultimate version is shown. Greetings, Belgian man 12:59, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
PS: Note that if you ask something a specific person, you can best use his or her talk page instead of your own.

Questions for possible Wikimedia release?[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings Professor Adewole. We have been attempting to put together a press release for Wikinews about Yoruba Wikipedia. Do you think you might be able to help us by offering some answers to the questions in the draft press release?

Q1. How fast is Wikipedia Yoruba growing at present?

Q2. How is Wikipedia Yoruba helping people to learn or practice the language?

Q3. Where do these learners live?

Q4 In your own words, why is it important for lots of people to speak Yoruba?

Q5. Are any new developments planned?

Q6. Has Wikipedia helped the Yoruba Language Task Force achieve its aims??

Many thanks, Open_Research

Space for collaboration?[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

I have created a pilot project which provides a space for people to meet to collaborate. It also contains a means to make automatic links to all WikiResources in a topic. The Yoruba page is here. At present, a Wikimedia journalist is using the resource to ask a few questions for a press release. However, you can use it to identify Yoruba related quotes, books and sources.81.103.226.223 00:44, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Please, could you translate this article onto the language of this Wikipedia? Thanks for your help. If you wanna translate your city onto Aragonese, Spanish, Catalonian, Galician o Asturian language, tell it to me, please. --Jeneme 15:44, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Dearest Loadewole, how are you? I've been trying to figure out how to request help here. I am wondering if somebody could help me translate a version of just two or three sentences of this article here in Yoruba? If you could help, I would really appreciate it. E se! :) -Cathi Maria 18:56, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Please, quality instead of quantity. Thanks--190.42.211.214 03:18, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Loadewole,

I hope we remember that we are building an encyclopedia here. I enjoy the articles you posted, but I wonder that they are really appropriate for an encyclopedia. Perhaps you may post them at Wikisource instead? But provided that you have the proper copy rights to them - if a work is not yours, and it is not "free", you may not post it on Wikimedia project unfortunately. :-) --Alanafe 21:05, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Prof Adewole,

Please do not create more pages like the one you created at Pun. Each page here must be about only one topic. Please go to this page for an example of what articles SHOULD look like. We have thousands of articles you have written that do not belong here, that now Demmy and myself must go to the trouble of deleting, one by one. It is a lot of effort for us, so please do not create more bad articles we have to delete. If you keep doing this, we may have to ban you to avoid the extra effort you will create. --Alanafe 02:06, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi! I'm a Hungarian Wikipedia editor, my name is Norbert Kiss. I'm very proud of my village and I would like to read about it in a lot of langauges. I translated already it into 10 languages (now it is in 28 languages), but I can't speak Yoruba. Could you help me. My village's English page is this: Ecser. Could you translate the page of Ecser into Yoruba? Then just link the side into the English version and I will see it, or you could write me, when it is ready. My Hungarian Wikipedia side is: My profile.

Thank you! Norbert

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bàtá requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
