Two pages, similar name

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Mac! It appears that you created two pages for the same subject. The content needs to be merged, keeping the better of the two page names (they aren't identical):

Then to request deletion of the empty page, replace its content with the duplicate page template. And please forgive my use of English; I have no knowledge of Èdè Yorùbá but help in the YO WP by making technical improvements. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:11, 16 Oṣù Kẹ̀sán 2018 (UTC)

 • REMINDER of the above duplicate page. It's great to see you are so active on the WP these days! You may see I've been helping with formatting, but this page is far beyond my understanding. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 18:28, 26 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)
User:Deborahjay, I believe the title of the one created on 28 Oṣù Keje 2018‎ is was wrong and has been redirected to Adéyẹyè Ẹnitàn Ògúnwúsì. T CellsTalk 20:00, 26 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)
Oops: indeed - and by me, over a year ago! The REDIRECT is a much better action than deleting a page whose name has a similar spelling. I've put a "strike-through" on the poor advice above. Thank you for your attention! -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:16, 26 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)
No, it wasn't a poor advice User: Deborahjay and thanks for keeping eyes on the pages. Regards. T CellsTalk 06:07, 27 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)

Double page for same biography subject

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Please see these two pages you created. They seem to be for the same person:

These are the actions needed:

 • Edit the older one to have all the information (content)
 • Link it to the Wikidata item with all the name spellings
 • The newer one needs to become a #REDIRECT page to the single page for this subject.

I can help with the technical parts but I don't know the Yoruba language. Thank you, -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 21:39, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2020 (UTC)

To search for an existing page in the Yoruba WP

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Mac! As promised earlier, here is an explanation for using Wikidata to discover if a page on a particular topic already exists in the Yoruba (or any) Wikipedia. The tehnique is based on searching in English, as it's the language with the most WP content.

 1. Go into Wikidata.
 2. At the top of the screen, to the left of your User name, click to choose the display language that appears.
 3. Now "Search for a language" and choose English. (N.B. Your written English is excellent!)
 4. On the second display line from the screen top, on the right, locate the "Search Wikidata" box (with a magnifying glass icon).
 5. Enter the page name you seek. Don't use special diacritic-marked letters from the Yoruba alphabet for this search.
 6. A suggested page or pages appear if an editor has added it in English for a Wikidata item on that topic.
 7. Select a page name (there may be multiple, and alternate wordings), which displays that Wikidata item. Try different spellings if necessary.
 8. Read the item's properties ("Statements") to confirm that it's the topic you're seeking.
 9. Scroll down and on the lower left see which (if any) WP language projects have a page on this topic.
 10. These are clickable "interwiki" links to other language versions that have been connected to this item in Wikidata.

If you were considering starting a new article and find an existing page in the YO WP, you can certainly evaluate it and bring it up to a better level. The matter of page name standards, I'd like to take up with User:T Cells who seems most knowledgeble. Meanwhile, I'm at your service for anything I can explain and help improve. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:00, 16 Oṣù Kínní 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Deborahjay. This is helpful. Macdanpets (ọ̀rọ̀), 21:24, 16 Oṣù Kínní 2020‎ (UTC)

New category needed

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Macdanpets! I'm requesting your help related to new pages you've created recently. Wikidata has an item d:Q8597890:

 • in English: Category:Lists of newspapers in the United States by state
 • in Yoruba: Ẹ̀ka:.......................................................

So if you would kindly either:

Thank you! -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 09:21, 12 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Deborahjay for your interest and development of Yorùbá Wikipedia, your contributions have been tremendous.
As for your request it is
 • "Àtòjọ Àwọn Ìwé-ìròyìn Orílẹ̀-èdè Amẹ́ríkà Ní Ìpínlẹ̀ Kọ̀ọ̀kan." Macdanpets 10:08, 12 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
This means "The List of American Newspapers in Each State". thanks Deborahjay. Macdanpets 10:20, 12 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
I appreciate the Yoruba knowledge you provide on such a regular basis, Macdanpets. How I help is to "wikify" new pages with categories and make interwiki links in Wikidata to other language versions. I'll now proceed with the new category for use in this group of pages. I'll also work on filling in the missing categories for individual states. Expect more queries in the future, though when possible I make progress independently. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 15:19, 12 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Thanks very much, I really appreciate all you do, especially on yowiki. Macdanpets 17:18, 12 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

Uniform style of page names

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

There is a rule at the main (English-language) Wikipedia about the style of page names (article titles). They are in "sentence case" (like a sentence in a text, not a book title). Capitalize the first letter, and then only proper nouns (such as specific names). So with the pages you just created, I think they need some changes (by a move) and I ask your approval:

The use of hyphens is according to Yoruba grammar, so I don't know about lórílẹ̀ èdè vs. lórílẹ̀-èdè. If you'll advise on which version is correct for each page, I can do the technical work of making the changes. We can also consult with the Yo.WP administrator Oníṣe:T Cells if you think that would be helpful. Cheers -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 11:57, 23 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

 • You are a senior editor, you can't be wrong the acceptable Wikipedia standards regarding the sentence case. Please make necessary technical corrections. As for lorílẹ̀-èdè and lórílẹ̀ èdè, the later is an omission, the former is correct (lorílẹ̀-èdè). Thanks for your interest and contributions to Yoruba Wikipedia. Macdanpets
Oníṣe: Macdanpets, contrary to your belief, a senior editor can be wrong. In fact, Wikipedia veterans sometimes make mistakes you will least expected. @Deborahjay, "lorílẹ̀-èdè" appears to be a compound modifier of "Nàìjíríà". So, Mac is correct. @Mac, please always sign your comments with the four tides ~~~~. Regards. T CellsTalk 14:55, 23 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Whoa, fellows, I also need confirmation of the capitalization rules for Yoruba! (For example, the rules of French and German differ from my native English, though I can read both with the aid of dictionaries.) What I can do is suggest a title on a new article's Talk page, and ask the Yoruba editor to confirm or further correct. I'm glad to progress at the level of basic improvements to new pages. -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 15:20, 23 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Yorùbá capitalization rules not different from English's. Macdanpets 09:56, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Great - this gives me more confidence in my proofreading work here. I will still ask for your confirmation before making page moves for uniform title style. The ones discussed above appear on their Talk pages, see:
* Ọ̀rọ̀:Àtòjọ Àwọn Ifáfitì Aládàání Lórílẹ̀ èdè Nàìjíríà
* Ọ̀rọ̀:Àtòjọ Àwọn Ifáfitì ìjọba Lórílẹ̀-èdè Nàìjíríà
I'll watch those pages for your approval. Cheers -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 13:26, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Noted. You are doing great job. Macdanpets 14:24, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

Your activity here

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

... is what keeps me active on the Yoruba WP. I want you to know (if you haven't seen this already by looking at my global contributions history): In the years 2017-2019 I made over 4,400 edits in the Zulu WP, about 10% of my grand total. I did help the ZU.WP reach the landmark of 1,000 pages before the 2018 Wikimania in Cape Town. But sadly, I decided to stop because there was not even one native speaker of isiZulu who could or would contribute regularly. Also there hasn't been an administrator, as here we have Oníṣe:T Cells whose presence is so positive. As a Westerner (though as a Jew I don't identify as white) I feel a commitment to use my skills in helping build African WP projects - so here we are! I'm glad to find useful ways to contribute. -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 16:35, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

Mine? wow, this is awesome. Am glad at your contributions, especially, in the technical areas of Yorùbá Wikipedia, you are wonderful. Thanks, you're a wonderful contributor. Macdanpets
@Deborajay, thanks for your kind words. I am impressed by Mac's commitment to the project as well and I am happy to continue to support him. As for you, Deborajay, words are not enough for me to describe you. You are a classical example of a good Wikipedian. Despite the fact that you neither speak nor understand Yoruba Wiipedia, you are doing so much work and adding so much value to this project. I wish to reiterate that your contributions to Yoruba Wikipedia are appreciated and I'd be happy to provide any support. Regards. T CellsTalk 18:36, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
To give due credit to my crosswiki role model I must mention someone whom you may know: Asaf Bartov (a.k.a. User:Ijon), whom I first met in 2001 and whose activities continue to inspire me. -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:00, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)
Asaf is a good role model and one of the few Wikipedians I hold in high esteem. We have met twice and I have attended his training on copyrights, Wikipedia and Wikidata. He is a very good teacher and someone you can be sure will be as honest as possible in his advice on any issue. T CellsTalk 19:47, 24 Oṣù Kejì 2020 (UTC)

How to sign your posts

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Preferred option

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Using four tildes

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

There are two ways to sign your posts:

 1. At the end of your comments simply type four tildes (~), like this: ~~~~.
 2. If you are using the edit toolbar option (by default, it appears above the edit box), click the signature icon<ref group=Note>If your browser is set to not show pictures, the button will be called "Your signature with timestamp". If the browser's settings don't allow JavaScript, the buttons will not appear. to add two hyphens and four tildes like this: --~~~~.

The four tildes will be automatically replaced with your signature after you have published the changes, as follows:

Wikimarkup Resulting code Resulting display
~~~~ Example (talk) 15:29, 25 Oṣù Ọ̀pẹ̀ 2024 (UTC) Example (talk) 15:29, 25 Oṣù Ọ̀pẹ̀ 2024 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]
Since typing four tildes adds the time and date to your resulting signature, this is the preferred option for signing your posts in discussions.
Note that if you choose to contribute without logging in, regardless of whether you have an account, you should still sign your posts. In this case your IP address will take the place of your username, and will link to your contributions history. Your IP address might look something like 192.0.2.213 or 2001:DB8:CEEE:21B:DB60:07FE:4277:63FF.
If, for some reason, you are not getting the above results when signing, see the SineBot Frequently Asked Questions for tips.
Using three tildes
[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]
Typing three tildes results in the following:
Wikimarkup Resulting code Resulting display
~~~ Example (talk) Example (talk)

However, since this does not date-stamp your signature, you may wish to sign this way only when leaving general notices on your user page or user talk page. This is also a convenient shortcut (rather than typing out the full code) when you want to provide a link to your user page.

Using five tildes

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Typing five tildes will convert to a date stamp with the current date and time, without adding your signature, like this:

Wikimarkup Resulting code Resulting display
~~~~~ 15:29, 25 Oṣù Ọ̀pẹ̀ 2024 (UTC) 15:29, 25 Oṣù Ọ̀pẹ̀ 2024 (UTC)
In general, when communicating with others, you should use one of the previous options and not only a timestamp. There are exceptions to this such as, when requesting assistance from the Third Opinion project the requested format for signing is the five tilde signature to slightly help improve neutrality from the responding volunteer.
In some templates, this is the preferred way to add the date.
ok. Macdanpets 06:47, 6 Oṣù Kẹrin 2020 (UTC)
Page name needed in Yoruba
[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]
Greetings, Mac! Perhaps you could look at the query at:
It's a page in development I started formatting for Women's History Month. T Cells knows about it, but since my posting he's been too busy to answer. The idea is to present it to the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, especially the recent AOCED workshop participants, as ideas for missing articles ("Women in Red"). -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 17:08, 9 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
We specificially need the wording to be Yoruba Women. How would that be written? -- Thanks, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 17:51, 9 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
You are right that I have been busy but I believe I responded to your post on my talk page here. Is there anything I am missing? T CellsTalk 20:33, 9 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Indeed you did already reply there! Now, we need the specific wording of the en:yo translation for
 • List of Yoruba women in politics
I've found two wordings already used in Yoruba WP for list articles, examples:
So Àkójọ or Àtòjọ, whichever is the better choice. I'll follow up. And Yoruba (not Nigerian) women. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:46, 9 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Section heading in Yoruba
[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]
I'm collecting a page of standard terms to use in the Yoruba WP. What would you suggest as best for the section heading External links used in the English WP and most others? This is a better wording than "Websites" which is too restrictive. The heading used (on Ilé-ìgbìmọ̀ Aṣòfin Oníbínibí ilẹ̀ Nàìjíríà) is:
 • Ijabo lode
Your advice is appreciated! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 15:33, 26 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Thank you Deborahjay, if what I understand about the "external links" is other sources/references apart from those mentioned in the reference column is correct, then it's Yorùbá translation is Àwọn Ìtọ́kasí Àrè. If my understanding of it, External Links is wrong, then, explain more to me, I will then give you the appropriate translation. Macdanpets 16:22, 26 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Thanks very much Deborahjay, should my understanding of "external link" as other sources /references apart from the ones listed in reference column, then it Yorùbá translation should be "Ìtọ́kasí Àrè", but if my understanding is wrong, please explain what Wikipedia actually mean by "external links " Macdanpets 07:29, 27 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
There are actually three section headings, described here in order of use:
 • References with template "Reflist" - this is for citing sources next to a line of text, according to Wiki markup format (that allows linking to a digital source). The citation gets a number next to the text, and the full citation with its number displays in this section heading near the bottom of the page. In the Yoruba WP, we see this as Àwọn Ìtọ́kasí Àrè or variations. What is most correct as a standard?
 • External links are sources not appearing in the body of the text as particular references (above). Sometimes they're an Official website, an IMDb entry, a link to online literature, etc. These are entered manually under this section heading, each with an asterisk and in single brackets linking to the digital source. This section heading is sometimes called "Websites" or "Web links" - but this is not inclusive enough. I suggest a literal En:Yo translation of "External links" - is this Ijabo lode or ??
 • Notes is a third and infrequently used section heading. It's for explanations that don't fit in the body of the text. These are like footnotes in an academic text. I'd rather not look into this at present, but focus on the above two which can immediately be standardized and used regularly.
Feel free to ask me for any further clarifications. I'm grateful for your attention to this process, which will make steady progree as in my proofreading YoWP pages I identify irregularities and ask for clarifications. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 13:09, 27 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Please clarify (because your answer just now is up in an earlier section):
 • To which heading does your answer Ìtọ́kasí Àrè apply? Is that preferred to Àwọn Ìtọ́kasí that's in use now?
 • What is the answer for External links?
OK then use Ìtọ́kasí Àrè. Macdanpets 14:32, 2 Oṣù Kẹrin 2020 (UTC)
"external links" is Ìtọ́kasí Àrè Macdanpets 15:25, 2 Oṣù Kẹrin 2020 (UTC)
I'll start using the corrected terms that you suggest. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 14:56, 2 Oṣù Kẹrin 2020 (UTC)
