Welcome to the Yoruba Wikipedia, Demmy! If you have any questions about how Wikipedia works, don't hesitate to ask me or someone else here... I don't speak Yoruba myself, but I'd like to learn it, and I am the ambassador of this Wikipedia. Belgian man 15:22, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Demmy, a welcome from me also! Unfortunately, I don't speak Yoruba either (though I do read some). You've added a bunch of fine articles on scientific subjects lately, thanks for that! If you need any help, for example in deleting spam or some other administrative task, I might be able to help out. See you around! — mark 16:17, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Demmy, this is just to note that I am currently on a three-month fieldtrip in Ghana, so I was unable to support your bid for adminship. Do let me know next time you want to try (use the 'email this user' function), because I will readily support you.

All the best, and thanks again for your good work around here.

Hi Demmy! I need the help of someone who knows Yoruba. The name of the German singer Ayọ (meaning 'joy' or 'joyful') is normaly written as Ayo. (with a dot at the end) in English or German articles. It is mentioned on several sites on the internet that the dot is important because without it Ayo would mean "onion" in Yoruba. However, I wasn't able to confirm this (although it is mentioned on the German version of her official website) and none of the online Yoruba dictionaries I found includes the word 'ayo' at all. An anonymous user has now edited the English article writing instead that ayo "would refer to a pitted board game popular among the Yorubas" (which seems to be supported by this website). I would be very grateful if you could maybe clearify the meaning of the Yorubian word 'ayo' (if it exists) and if it has anything to do with onions, so that the correct information can be included in this Wikipedia article.

Thanks very much! Optimale 12:39, 28 August 2007

Ayò (without the dot on o) does indeed mean game (any type of game; not just the pitted board game referred to by the anonymous). "Àlùbọ́sà" is the yoruba word for onion. Ayọ̀ (with the dotted o) of course mean joy or joyful. Demmy 16:08, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the information Demmy.
Hmm I see you write ọ̀ instead of (an additional grave accent above the o). So is Ayọ wrong and should really be Ayọ̀ (e.g. to mean joy, although the singers name seems always to be written with a dot underneath a normal o, not an ò)???
But I assume in the simplified writting Ayo. the finer detail of using o or ò gets lost anyway and the trailing dot just represents the dot underneath. So in conclusion Ayo without the trailing dot doesn't have anything to do with the word 'onion' in Yoruba and this story is just made up. Optimale 9:56, 29 August 2007

Please, could you translate this article onto the language of this Wikipedia? Thanks for your help. If you wanna translate your city onto Aragonese, Spanish, Catalonian, Galician o Asturian language, tell it to me, please. --Jeneme 12:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

I will try and do it this weekend. Sorry for the late response. Demmy 12:13, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Demmy, thank you for message and the observation. I will try to include link to my translation whenever I am doing the editing. Thank you very much. Sowoletoyin (ọ̀rọ̀)

Good Afternoon Demmy,

Could you please write a stub http://yo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_Grammar_School - just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_Grammar_School? Only 2-5 sentences enough. Please. --Per Angusta 04:11, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Demmy, please set Your interface here in the Special:Preferences to yo, because right now You are translating the English interface: MediaWiki:Toolbox/en (every message with .../en is from the English interface. And please make translations preferably on Betawiki (I saw You already did some translations there, thanks :) )

If You like I would also like to invite You to #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Please feel free to contact me if You are interested on my meta talkpage, best regards, --birdy (:> )=| 12:06, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Cool, thanks! If You just delete MediaWiki:Tooltip-p-logo/en, MediaWiki:Toolbox/en and MediaWiki:Undeletecomment/en, then the English interface names will be restored (for those only who use the English setting in the preferences), best regards, --birdy (:> )=| 13:46, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Demmy! I see you are doing more translations here than on Betawiki. Birdy said this, but I want to say it again; please translate on Betawiki. The only disadvantage is that you will see it over a few days, not immediately. For the rest, there are only advantages: You can use the Betawiki translations on every MediaWiki wiki, this includes every Wikimedia wiki! Thank you very much, SPQRobin 17:13, 9 February 2008 (UTC) (btw, if you want to answer, you can do it here)

Ok. I didn't know they were different. I will switch then. thanks demmy 17:21, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Thank you! If you want to know more about the differences between translating here and translating on betawiki, see betawiki:Translating:Why use Betawiki. By the way, if you like statistics, you can view them on betawiki:Translating:Group statistics. Greetings, SPQRobin 23:08, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

pls explain your reversions. I think it is inappropriate. If u are worried that people cannot type Yoruba diacritics when searching for a page, that is why we have a redirects, check for example Naijiria, u notice please that u still reach the intended page. --Alanafe 19:18, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Demmy, I noticed many of the non-encyclopedic pages created by Professor Adewole had the word "ISBN" in them so I search for it. [1] in fact it is a good list of articles we must delete. We must be careful though as some articles can be save, for example please view [2] --Alanafe 14:31, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Could you please be so kind to give user:Escarbot User:TXiKiBoT User:Thijs!bot User:VolkovBot User:CarsracBot User:JAnDbot] the bot status. Or ask someone that can very nicely. Because it look like those editors are done the most of the editing. Beside myself and what I do a bot could do better :) Carsrac 21:24, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Update it is a work in progress and some of the bots on this already have a bot flag. An up to date list is on my talk page. With a few exception they are all very well know bot's with a lot of bots flags on other wiki's. The unknow are CarsracBot and JAnDbot Carsrac 10:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Because there is no reaction or should I say interest. I have placed the request on meta. Carsrac 10:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

    • I think its better there at meta, because we have no beaurecrat here. Of course I would love to give bot approval if I knew how its done. demmy 13:02, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
      • The technical thing of giving flags are done by the steward, but they want to have local advice (read approval) for the flag. And that is what I was asking. CarsracBot 10:58, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

How are you, Demmy?

I would like to know if you would please help me as so to improve this fascinating, albeit short, article that has changed title on so many numerous occasions but has yet to grow enough from the English translation.

A friendly hug!

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. This will involve creating a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and adding a line at the top noting that it is used here. In particular, this policy allows automatic acceptance of known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests.

Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; it will be implemented in one week if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests. Carsrac 11:13, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Done. —Pathoschild 04:49:43, 07 June 2008 (UTC)

As an Administrator, you are allowed into #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Any member of the channel can invite you in temporarily, but you need an invite exemption from a channel operator to get in whenever you want. Please come to #wikimedia and ask for an invite.

Any admin from any project is welcome and it is a good place for cross-wiki coordination of vandal and spam fighting. It is also useful for new admins to contact more experienced admins in real-time to get help with the more complicated admin tasks such as history merges/splits and importing via Special:Import.

Please remember to translate the interface at betawiki: only and to upload images preferably at commons:

Thank you

The translation request

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

The translation request
Hi! Could I ask you to translate the article which you can find below into Yoruba? Please help me to show our language to the world – the article is quite short and has been selected from English and Silesian article and shortened as possible to contain only the basic informations. If you would finish, please, make me know on my Silesian or Polish discussion. Thanks in advance.
PS. If you want me to translate any article into Polish or Silesian, contact me without hesistation.
So, here’s the text to translation:

The Silesian language (Silesian: ślůnsko godka, ślůnski, sometimes also pů našymu) is a language spoken by people in the Upper Silesia region in Poland, but also in Czech Republic and Germany. In 2002 about 56 000 declared Silesian as their native language, but the number of speakers is estimated on 1 250 000.

Silesian is closely related to Polish language, that’s why it is considered as a dialect of Polish by some linguistics.

Libel investigation

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hi Demmy, fyi: I've restored Ọ̀rọ̀:Ferdinand_Magellan, because the so called libel investigation mentioned in the page history, if not fake, only applies to en:wiki and admins there have of course no authority on other projects. The user in question is vandalising cross wiki as ever and the warning on the talk page therefore still hasn't lost its meaning. See [3] and [4]. Regards, Wutsje 03:43, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

You have made corrections to several articles I have started on Nigerian politicians on the English wikipedia. That is really helpful. I try to stay neutral and factual, working purely from sources available on the web, but if you see any pattern where you think I am consistently showing bias please point it out to me. There are probably sensitivities I am completely blind to. Don't be polite! Thanks, Aymatth2 22:28, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Round Rocks / Mountains in south western Nigeria

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hello Demmy! As a small boy I lived some 3 years in Ikeja Lagos and some years ago I have been travelling with my father on a business trip from Lagos via Ibadan, Oshogbo, Ilorin, Ilesha, Ondo, Ado Ekiti and some other cities. On my trip I have seen some round Rocks looking like gigant egs in the landscape. The Rocks have a heigth of approx. 200 - 300 Meters above ground level, having a small forest on their top and they have a very plain and even surface. Do you know the names of this rocks or mountains? Please also leave a short message on my disciussion page. --Bullenwächter 09:45, 9 Oṣù Kẹ̀sán 2011 (UTC)

Great work on this Wikipedia. Have you seen the list of the most viewed Yoruba Wikipedia articles? It appears that the article Internet is the most viewed, after the main page. Perhaps it's worth expanding that article a little? Just an idea; keep up the great work, 24.84.9.97 20:05, 8 Oṣù Kínní 2012 (UTC)

This wikipedia is not in Yoruba but a mixture of English and a bit Yoruba. Stop copying text from the English Wikipedia please. And stop creating articles in english with those texts. It has 1. to be in Yoruba, and it is 2. illegal to copy text giving credits! Consider the principles plz.--Poarps (talk) 17:20, 4 Oṣù Kẹjọ 2012 (UTC)

You don't get it. Most content here (mostly from you) is copied text from the English Wikipedia, which is absolutely forbidden and senseless. You can look it up in the English Wikipedia either. The Yoruba Wikipedia is obsolete then. We have to report this to the Wikimedia Foundation.--Poarps (talk) 08:10, 6 Oṣù Kẹjọ 2012 (UTC)
Actually, it is allowed as long as he cites the source. If he discloses that the text comes from the English Wikipedia, it's okay. The Yoruba Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia have the same license. Now, what you can do, is ask Poarps to translate the material upon copying it. WhisperToMe (talk) 21:59, 9 Oṣù Kẹ̀sán 2012 (UTC)

Article translation/collaboration request

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hi Demmy, how are you? Mate, I am trying to find an editor/s who can help by translating User:Russavia/Polandball into Yoruba. I noticed that you have created articles on Yoruba Wikipedia such as Ajagun Ojúòfurufú Nàìjíríà, and i am wondering if we could make a collaborative trade?

If you could translate that article into Yoruba for me, I would be happy to upload approximately 50 Nigerian aviation photos to Commons from amongst the 200,000 I have permission to upload. I have uploaded a number of photos relating to Nigerian aviation to give you a brief idea of what I can upload, and I am keeping a gallery at User:Russavia of photos uploaded.

Would you be interested in such a "trade"? Do let me know, either by responding here, or on my talk page, or by emailing me. Cheers, Russavia (talk) 09:02, 21 Oṣù Kẹ̀sán 2012 (UTC)

Hi Demmy, will you be doing an article on Owoye Andrew Azazi and the others who were killed in the Nigerian Navy helicopter crash? If so, let me know, and I will upload some photos of the helicopter which crashed to Commons for use on that article. Cheers, Russavia (talk) 08:44, 16 Oṣù Kejìlá 2012 (UTC)

It appears that I don't have access to the actual helicopter involved in the crash, but you can see two photos of the "Ajagun Ojúomi Nàìjíríà" Agusta A-109 "sisterships" on my userpage. If they come in useful for you, i'll let you decide -- if you create such an article that is :) Russavia (talk) 15:51, 16 Oṣù Kejìlá 2012 (UTC)

Did you ever receive the Wikipedian of the Year award prize money?

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Demmy, Jimmy Wales said the other day in English Wikipedia that even though close to two years have passed, he still has not paid the 2011 winner of his Wikipedian of the Year award the promised $5,000 in prize money. He says the delay is because he wanted to travel to the winner's country and make a ceremony of it. How is it in your case? Have you received the prize money from Jimmy Wales, and/or has a similar ceremony been planned, or already taken place? Thanks for any info you can give me on this. Best wishes, Jayen466 (ọ̀rọ̀) 07:01, 24 Oṣù Kẹrin 2013 (UTC)

Jimmy Wales contacted me in January but I haven't heard from him since. He told me then that he was going to Davos and when he return he would process the paper work and send me the prize money but he is yet to contact me so I am really not sure what the delay is. He didn't say anything about holding ceremony. Demmy (ọ̀rọ̀) 15:57, 24 Oṣù Kẹrin 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Demmy. I wish I could say that surprises me, but it doesn't. I'll talk to some journalists and get back to you. Best wishes, --Jayen466 (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:41, 24 Oṣù Kẹrin 2013 (UTC)

My name is Anna. I work for the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. It's nice to meet you. :)

I've just posted a message about VisualEditor and I hope you can translate it into Yoruba.

I'm also contacting you because we need Yoruba translators to help with the deployment of the new mw:VisualEditor on yo.wikipedia.

It's important that we get the User Guide and the User Interface translated before VisualEditor is deployed to users, if we can.

To translate the User Interface, you need to start an account at translatewiki.net.

More information on the translating work is available at MediaWiki: Translation Central.

Translations of medical articles

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hello Demmy! Happy New Year, I hope you are well.

The medical project on the English Wikipedia and Translators Without Borders have been working together to translate high-quality medical content (featured articles) into lots of languages, including Yoruba. There are four completed articles ready to go. Instructions on how to add them are [8]. If you would like to go ahead and add them, please do, and if you don't have time I can do it. Thanks! -- Phoebe (ọ̀rọ̀) 18:31, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2014 (UTC)

I went ahead and added Hepatitis C -- Phoebe (ọ̀rọ̀) 18:46, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2014 (UTC)
Great work. You can add the other 3 articles if possible. My time is limited presently so I am only able to attend to routine admin stuff. Demmy (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:16, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2014 (UTC)
OK, I will add them. I don't speak Yorubu so can't check the content, but these have been reviewed by two translators - and let me know if you see any mistakes. Thanks for everything you do here! -- Phoebe (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:55, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2014 (UTC)
Hi Demmy, can you please check that this article is at the proper title? Ọna-ọfun. It's a translation of simple:Streptococcal_pharyngitis. It's the only one I'm not sure of. Thanks! -- Phoebe (ọ̀rọ̀) 22:26, 3 Oṣù Kínní 2014 (UTC)

Hi Demmy,

I trust you're fine. I left a message here and I was told you are an active admin here. I wish to discuss my observation with you to see how we can fix the problems and improve this project. I am a native speaker of Yoruba language. I write and speak the language perfectly. I have created some articles here but I am currently helping with translation of medical articles to Yoruba. I started yesterday with Àjẹsára jẹ̀dọ̀jẹ̀dọ̀ B which I translated from Hepatitis B. I patrolled several articles yesterday and discovered that they were not written in a way that reflect the language. For example, the article Serena Williams was not written in a way that reflect the Yoruba language. Note the lack of the signs. The truth is, Yoruba language has its syntax that govern the structure of sentences in a that language which I believe you know perfectly. For example, In Yoruba language, Igba means 200 in English, ìgbá means Garden egg in English, ìgbà means Time in English and Igbá means Calabash in English. Now, if an editor is writing about "Time" and he writes Igba, this is misleading. If such written styles continues then the entire article will make little or no sense and such contributions is net negative. The truth is multiple articles had been written like this here. Is there away we can correct this? if not is there a way we can prevent such occurrence in the future? Do you have a tool we could recommend for editors that could make writing with the syntax easy? Thank you. Wikicology (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:53, 20 Oṣù Kàrún 2016 (UTC)

This is tricky, it's a kind of disambiguation. I don't think you can prevent such occurrences, but it would be possible to build a tool to help fix them. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 23:54, 26 Oṣù Kàrún 2016 (UTC).
Yes, there is a configuration that can make typing in Yoruba language easier. I would be glad to help new and established editors with this configuration. However, only humans can fix the existing problematic articles without the signs (\ and / sign) and that could be done in form of copy editing (although that is time consuming). I mean something like this. warm regards. Wikicology (ọ̀rọ̀) 00:10, 27 Oṣù Kàrún 2016 (UTC)
Hello Wicology, sorry for the late reply I have been busy with other project. how may I help with your idea? I am a Yoruba by the way Demmy (ọ̀rọ̀) 07:40, 28 Oṣù Kàrún 2016 (UTC)
Demmy, please accept my apology for this extremely slow response. I am glad that you're from a yoruba tribe. No doubt, you are an asset to yoruba language Wikipedia. I am very delighted to join you in improving this project. I have some idea which I would like to share with you soon. In the meantime, I want to give more attention to copy editing. Warm regards.Wikicology (ọ̀rọ̀) 21:25, 28 Oṣù Kàrún 2016 (UTC)

I am fine thank you. Hope you are doing fine as well. I will delete the article. If you come across any other articles that needed deleting just put the template {{delete}} at the end of the article and it will be automatically be included in articles for deletion. Hi Demmy,

I trust you're fine. Thanks for creating the above article. Could you please, fix the article by assigning the Yoruba diacritical marks? Diacritical mark is an integral part of Yoruba language. Unlike English language, this is what actually give every words their meaning. We could fix it together, if you wish. Meanwhile, did you used any content translator in creating the article? I am interested in learning from editors, to better understand how they contribute to Yoruba Wikipedia. Looking forward to hear from you. All the best. Dear Demmy, as there are not many active Wikipedians around here, I thought it would be kind to say "hello". I am currently creating a Yoruba language corpus as part of my work for Lexical Computing. I have fixed some technical issues (mainly with invalid characters) on this wiki in the process. I had to guess the best candidate for a fix a few times, however, so if you did not mind, I would welcome you briefly reviewing my changes (with the exception of a few they are all "cosmetic") listed here. I confess not to speak Yoruba at all, but I have dedicated a few hours to learn about the language prior to starting my work (and we have good software to support us in the process). Greetings, Demmy! Although I don't know the Yoruba language and have never (yet!) visited Nigeria or any other part of Africa, I'm here to help improve pages. These days I'm looking at the Ẹ̀ka:Àwọn olùkọ̀wé ará Nàìjíríà. I alphabetize names in the category, check the Wikidata item, and if there's an interwiki page in a language I can read, will copy/paste simple content (such as a full name in the lead sentence, then check the alias in Wikidata). I discovered you had created the page on Odinaka Anudu (see next topic). As I see you have a long history here at the yo.wp, I may contact you with specific queries. Pleased to meet you! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 20:57, 28 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Demmy! Since you created the page for Odinaka Anudu in 2009, it's remained undeveloped. Also the Wikidata item is almost empty. Kindly look at Ọ̀rọ̀:Odinaka Anudu#Page needs more content for specifics. No rush, and thank you! -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 21:02, 28 Oṣù Kejìlá 2019 (UTC)

Corrupt content from a 2010 infobox edit

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Greetings, Demmy! Since this edit of yours in 2010 on the page Gúúsù Áfríkà, the word "Àsìá" appears under the country flag at the top of the Infobox. I don't understand how it happened, so I don't know how to fix it. Your help is appreciated! -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 11:35, 31 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)
Updated to add: The same problem occurs on the Sámbíà page infobox, and perhaps others. I'm willing to systematically check and fix all instances of this problem, but still need help identifying the source and remedy. -- Deborahjay (ọ̀rọ̀) 12:25, 31 Oṣù Kẹta 2020 (UTC)

Hello Demmy,

Thank you so much for all the work you do. It is great to have you doing so much work to ensure that knowledge is available in your language. Please, we will need your help in volunteering to translate the pages below to Yoruba:

Translating these pages will help educate more people about the Inuka team and their projects. Please, don't feel pressured to finish all the translation; it is okay to translate some of the pages.

How we will see unregistered users

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Files without a license

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hi! Some of the files you uploaded have no license. If you see this could you please add a license? And also a source (for example "own photo")? --MGA73 (ọ̀rọ̀) 19:15, 4 Oṣù Kẹjọ 2022 (UTC)

First of all...I appreciate your feeling buh I'm sorry I won't be able to reciprocate it for reasons best known to me. 105.112.190.67 22:12, 5 Oṣù Kọkànlá 2022 (UTC)

Cleaning up files

[àtúnṣe àmìọ̀rọ̀]

Hello! Greetings from Denmark!

According to wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy all files need a valid license. Either a free license like c:Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 or a non-free. But to use non-free files yo.wikipedia need an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP).

Files without a valid license should be deleted.

Perhaps you can check the files you have uploaded and either check if they are free or non-free?

If they are free they need a license, a source and an author. If you are the photographer the source could be a text like "I took this photo" and the author your username. If from somewhere else we need an url or other information about where the photo is from and who made it and why it is free.

Perhaps you can also tell any other users that uploaded files to do the same? --MGA73 (ọ̀rọ̀) 08:38, 18 Oṣù Agẹmọ 2024 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]

Hello!

Could you delete the 1945 flag? There was no such flag: it was not adopted until 1947.

Thanks. Kwamikagami (ọ̀rọ̀) 07:40, 27 Oṣù Ògún 2024 (UTC)[ìdáhùn]
